Transfer credit is awarded for academic courses completed at regionally accredited institutions. Under the provisions of the Statewide Course Numbering System, courses taken at a Florida public university or community college will be accepted as equivalent coursework. Courses judged to be equivalent to FIU coursework will be accepted for transfer credit.

All transfer work is evaluated first by the Office of Admissions to determine overall acceptance of credit. The final applicability of transfer credit rests with the respective academic department. Admission to FIU does not guarantee acceptance into all programs or courses offered by the University.

Fewer Than 60 Credits
Students transferring with fewer than 60 credit hours may need to submit ACT/SAT scores and official high school transcripts. These applicants must meet the same requirements as beginning freshmen.

Completed AA/60 Credits
Applicants who have earned an Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a public Community College or State University in Florida will be considered for admission without restriction.

Applicants who have not earned an AA degree must:

  • Have 60 semester hours of transferable credit.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Must present College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) scores.

Equivalency Process
During the registration period, the advisors will not be able to give you detailed information on your transfer courses.  The goal of advising at this point is to enroll the students in courses for the upcoming semester.  It is highly unlikely that the equivalency process will take place before the beginning of your first semester.

  1. If time is available the advisor will check the college’s transfer equivalency log to determine if a student’s institution and business coursework is in the log.  Otherwise, students should make an appointment to speak to an advisor once the semester has begun to have this done.  Typically, students will not need to equate every course taken at the previous institution.

  2. If the institution/course in question has not been evaluated by the college’s faculty, the student will need to provide a detailed description of the course content including the texts used to the advisor.  Typically, a syllabus is sufficient. The description must be in English.  Translations must be done by a certified translator.  Students cannot provide their own translations.  Documents provided by the home institution in English are acceptable.

  3. The advisor will assist the student in completing the Transfer Equivalency Request form and verify the information provided as well as the documentation.  Titles and course numbers must match for the advisor to accept the information.

  4. The packet of information will be forwarded to the appropriate department for evaluation.  Normally, the packet is returned to the advisor within two weeks.  Students are strongly encouraged to make copies of all documentation submitted.

  5. Students may check the progress of their requests via the SASS audit or the equivalency database.  Your advisor will explain how to read the SASS audit during your first or second advising session.
